{"id":3654859,"date":"2025-07-11T14:51:29","date_gmt":"2025-07-11T21:51:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.montereyherald.com\/?p=3654859"},"modified":"2025-07-11T15:06:27","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T22:06:27","slug":"inclusive-playground-to-be-part-of-city-park-at-the-dunes-in-marina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montereyherald.com\/2025\/07\/11\/inclusive-playground-to-be-part-of-city-park-at-the-dunes-in-marina\/","title":{"rendered":"Inclusive playground to be part of City Park at the Dunes in Marina"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MARINA \u2013 The Marina City Council recently approved a schematic design for a state-of-the-art, custom-designed, inclusive playground within the City Park at the Dunes, a future public recreation area at the site next to the proposed aquatics and sports center.<\/p>\n<p>City Park at the Dunes is proposed for a patch of land recently cleared of former Fort Ord Army base structures bordered by 2nd Avenue to the east, 8th Street to the north, 6th Street to the south, and 1st Avenue to the west.<\/p>\n<p>The inclusive playground will be about 30,000-38,000 square feet, situated within City Park&#8217;s boundaries and will break the mold of traditional, manufactured playgrounds by creating one that is custom-designed, community-built and unique to the ideas and dreams of Marina youth and their families, according to city documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA playground is important at this location for this region of our city to meet the needs of youth under 12,\u201d said Marina Mayor Bruce Delgado. \u201cAn inclusive park is important to meet the needs of all children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Delgado said that various components of this city park are consistent with Marina&#8217;s 2005 Parks and Rec Master Plan, using the city parks as a whole to collectively meet the city&#8217;s recreation needs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot every park can meet all needs, but our park system aspires to do this,\u201d said Delgado.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2023, the City Council received a presentation on the various concept options for the City Park at the Dunes and approved one of the four.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2024, the Council received a presentation and approved the specific program elements in the park, which include a great lawn, fitness court, multi-sport court, sand volleyball court, tennis\/pickleball courts, a restroom and an expansive inclusive playground.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2024, the City Council approved an agreement between the city of Marina and Leathers and Associates for design services, project management services and construction supervision for the inclusive playground for the City Park at the Dunes.<\/p>\n<p>In April 2025, the Recreation and Cultural Services Department, with the assistance of the Inclusive Playground Steering Committee, the Recreation and Cultural Services Commission and Leathers and Associates, hosted a Design Day which consisted of school site visits, focus group meetings and a large community engagement event to solicit input and inspire the playground design.<\/p>\n<p>Design Day was a huge success, according to the city, with nearly 1,500 children participating by sharing their ideas and sketching their dream playground. Additionally, more than 25 educators \u2013 about half of whom work directly with children with special needs \u2013 and parents of special needs children participated in three different focus groups. More than 500 community members attended the kickoff event.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the Recreation and Cultural Services Commission and the All-Inclusive Playground Steering Committee received a presentation on the schematic design for the Inclusive Playground at the City Park at the Dunes.
