{"id":3731385,"date":"2026-02-05T15:54:51","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T23:54:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.montereyherald.com\/?p=3731385"},"modified":"2026-02-05T16:15:40","modified_gmt":"2026-02-06T00:15:40","slug":"high-school-football-gray-steps-down-as-pacific-groves-head-coach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montereyherald.com\/2026\/02\/05\/high-school-football-gray-steps-down-as-pacific-groves-head-coach\/","title":{"rendered":"High School football: Gray steps down as Pacific Grove&#8217;s head coach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PACIFIC GROVE \u2013 Even though Jeff Gray had been preparing for the moment, emotions got to him when he met with his players Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Having been a part of the Pacific Grove High coaching staff for two-plus decades &#8212; the past five as the head football coach, Gray announced during lunch period to his players that he was stepping down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were some tough goodbyes,\u201d Gray said. \u201cIt was a little sad. The way I put it to the kids, I thought it was time for some new energy for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taking the reins of the program during the height of the pandemic, Gray went 22-18 in four full seasons, just missing the playoffs in 2023 with a 7-3 overall record.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t make the playoffs, we didn\u2019t win \u2018The Shoe,&#8217;\u201d Gray said, referring to The Shoe Trophy awarded to the winner of the Carmel-PG game. \u201cMaybe it\u2019s time for someone else to get it done. I wasn\u2019t sure I could give 100 percent to the program mentally any longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A lot of personal reasons went into Gray&#8217;s decision, including an illness to his father Andy \u2013 who was on his staff \u2013 last October. Gray also recently became engaged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do want to spend more time with my dad,\u201d Gray said. \u201cLast year was the first time he was not able to finish a season in 50-plus years. And my fianc\u00e9e and I want to travel. Football is a commitment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Gray began contemplating retiring after the Breakers&#8217; season finale last fall, he didn\u2019t want to make a hasty decision. Clearly, he still has passion for the game. Yet, the fire was flickering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just didn\u2019t think I\u2019d be all there,\u201d said Gray, who made out the schedule and made sure the equipment was refurbished. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to regret it in October. It wouldn\u2019t be fair to the players.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gray is the third coach in the county who won\u2019t be returning, joining Ben Ceralde, who resigned at North Salinas, and Ben Newman, who was not retained at Alvarez. Both those positions have been filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was definitely a surprise,\u201d Pacific Grove athletic director Dan Powers said. \u201cOur desire was for Coach Gray to continue as our football coach. He coaches for the right reasons. He\u2019s an old school coach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A search will immediately begin at Pacific Grove, with no timetable to name a replacement. At least two coaches on Gray&#8217;s staff have expressed interest, while other outside interest has already surfaced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a pretty desirable position,\u201d Powers said. \u201cWe feel there is more than enough time. Ideally, we\u2019d like to have someone on campus. That might not be the case based on openings in the district.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gray has been a physical education teacher at Forest Grove Elementary, which is adjacent to the high school campus, for 35 years.<\/p>\n<p>Before becoming the Breakers&#8217; head coach, Gray had two stints as the program\u2019s offensive coordinator, including 2014-2019 before taking the head coaching job.<\/p>\n<p>Gray also served as a varsity baseball coach for 14 years from 1992-2005, capturing three Mission Trail Athletic League titles and two Central Coast Section Division III crowns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#8217;s had a great run as a baseball coach and was an excellent football coach,\u201d said Powers, who is also the school&#8217;s basketball coach.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past three years, Pacific Grove has shot out of the gates, going a combined 13-2 in the first half of the season, but just 3-12 in the second half of the year, as injuries depleted a roster of fewer than 30 players.<\/p>\n<p>Pacific Grove hasn\u2019t been to the postseason since 2019 and hasn\u2019t won \u2018The Shoe\u2019 since 2014, when Gray began his second stint as the program&#8217;s offensive coordinator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not my entire reason for stepping down,\u201d Gray said. \u201cI realized there is a finality to what I want to do. I didn\u2019t want my mind wandering elsewhere. I didn\u2019t even tell my dad what I was thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the thought of not preparing for a Friday night game will take some getting used to, Gray said that is not what he\u2019ll miss the most about coaching.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll miss talking non-football stuff with the kids,\u201d Gray said. \u201cWhat\u2019s going on in their lives, what happened that particular day in school.
